4 Ways To Save On Moving Costs

If you are moving on a limited budget, finding ways to save on the move is important. Fortunately, there are many things you can do to keep more money in your pocket and still get all of your possessions safely to your new destination. Here are a few things you can do to save.

Know the Charges

Before signing the contract with the moving company, take time out and read the fine print. Pay close attention to the charges on the contract. By knowing exactly which charges you could face, you can look for those you can cut. For instance, some moving companies charge if they have to walk more than a certain distance within the home to pick up items to move. If this is true of the company you choose, you and your family can ensure the items are within that range to avoid an additional fee.

Move Smaller Items

Chances are, your mover is charging based on the weight of the items being transported. To help cut down on your overall weight, pack up some of your smaller items and move them yourself. For instance, you can transport all of the clothing, small pieces of furniture, and electronics in your car or truck.

Find Free Moving Supplies

One of the biggest moving expenses you could face is for the moving supplies. You could easily spend a good part of your moving budget on boxes, tape, and other supplies. Fortunately, there is a way around this.

In the weeks prior to your move, start visiting local stores and asking for empty cardboard boxes. Some stores even toss out bubble wrap, which can be used to wrap your fragile items. Ask friends and family for old newspapers, too. You can even use clothing to wrap up your valuables so that they can be safely transported.

Choose an Off-Peak Time

Some periods throughout the year are busier for movers than others. As a result, movers tend to charge more during those periods. For instance, the summer time is considered a peak time because many families move during that time period because schools are out. If possible, choose to move during an off-peak time.

There are many other ways you can save on the expenses associated with moving. In the weeks leading to your move, take some time out and explore all of your expenses and look for areas in which you can make cuts.
