Protecting Your Electronic Equipment In A Storage Unit

There are many times in life where you may find you need a storage unit. Perhaps you are moving from one home to another and you need a place to temporarily store your items. It could be that you are going out of the country for a while and need storage. Maybe you just have run out of room and you want to make sure that your belongings are safely stored. It does not matter the reason why you need storage, the most important thing is that you have a good and secure storage unit. This is especially true when you have expensive electronics that you want to keep safe. Below are some tips for properly storing your electronics in a storage unit.

  1. Select the Right Storage Unit. The most important thing that you can do when storing your computers or electronics in a storage unit is to make sure that you have selected a unit that is properly equipped to protect your belongings. When it comes to making sure that your electronics are safe, there are 2 very important factors.
    1. Moisture Control. The first is making sure that the moisture levels in the unit are controlled. An excess amount of water in the air can cause electronic equipment to rust and get destroyed. Many storage units will have a dehumidifier that will lower the moisture levels so that your electronic equipment stays safe.
    2. Temperature Control. Another important factor when selecting a storage unit is that it be temperature controlled as well. In extreme weather, electronics equipment can expand and contract which will eventually cause damage. When the storage unit has a stable temperature, the electronics equipment will not be subject to these extremes.
  2. Cover Equipment. Another important tip is to  make sure that you are covering your electronic equipment. There can be quite a bit of dust and dirt in the storage unit that can get into the electronics and cause problems. Covering the equipment will prevent this dust buildup.
  3. Keep Electronics off of the Floor. You will also want to make sure that the equipment is not on the floor. The floor will get colder than the rest of the unit and could also get water on it when it rains outside. By keeping the electronics raised, you will prevent water and weather damage.

Electronics can be expensive. By following the above tips, you will better ensure that your equipment stays safe while in a storage unit.
